New Shoes Theatre Company previews
MY NAME IS ANTONINO CALDERONE
by Dacia Maraini and directed by Nicolette Kay
Fri 24th & Sat 25th Feb
Starts 8pm
Starring Tim Woodwood (TV's 'Mad Dogs', BBC drama 'Wings'
and 'Murder City')
The true confessions of a Mafia boss who controlled the
affairs of the Mafia in Catania, Sicily, until the late 70’s and when arrested,
in France. Calderone decided to co-operate with Judge Giovanni Falcone who then
spent over a year interviewing him. Calderone’s sensational revelations led to
200 arrests and were collected into a book “The Men of Dishonour”
The story told to us by this mafia penito is guilty of a
certain reticence, distortion, adjustments of his point of view. But it is
fundamentally sincere and you can tell by his tone that he tells the truth. The
simplicity of Calderone's evidence implies complexity and slowly, slowly
reveals the shadows that are pressing on his conscience. The surprising thing
is that everything ultimately contributes to the formation of an objective
judgement on the Mafia. And such a personal, intimate judgement cannot pupate,
it transforms itself into an open honest cultural awareness
