Swing music greets you as you enter The Takeaway Shop, Amy Lord’s interactive art project. A gallery and educational space in one room, it brings together the art of bookbinding and bookmaking with the history of Deptford. Here you can make a book, have some tea and learn about what happened in an area rich with past delights and drama.

“I found loads of relics around Deptford and wanted to know where they had come from. People would tell me snippets about Deptford. They knew about the Russian Tsar living here and the author of King Kong being brought up here,” said Lord, 26, from Lewisham way.

From murder to bread riots, from the New Cross station fire in 1844 to tea and coffee merchants, Deptford’s full historical splendour is on show. But Lord’s project is not just about what she has found.

“Ideally I want people to bring photos I can copy and scan so the archive grows over time,” she explained.

With me were two freelance illustrators. Nick Marsh, 24, from Bow, got stuck in with the glue gun and some green and purple fabric. He said: “It’s a lot of fun. It gives you an excuse to play, and it’s nice to vent creativity.”

Cutting up pictures to put in his book, Richard Baker, 25, from Clapham explained why he came to the Takeaway Shop: “I moved to London about two months ago and wanted to get involved in more creative activities and meet some creative people.

“It just seemed pretty cool, to get involved and learn about the history of London.”

Funded by Arts Council England and IdeasTap, the artist’s project began to take shape in September last year: “I was seeing Deptford X [a contemporary visual arts festival from July to September] around the corner and I came to something here at number82.

“I’d been looking for a space to do a pop-up thing for a while and at the empty shops in Deptford, but no matter how many letting agents I spoke to, they said, ‘no I can’t get you in touch with the owner’.”

Originally from Newcastle, Lord moved to Lewisham a year ago having lived elsewhere in London. She studied theatre and performance design at the Liverpool Institute for Performing Arts and has been interested in art since she was a child.

“I used to make a lot of mood-boards and things like that. My mum was generally quite crafty with me and we used to make puppets.”

The Takeaway Shop is based at number82, an independent project venue that offers exhibition space as well as development and education programmes. They also provide support for creative projects like Lord’s.

She hopes to do more workshops at schools after the project ends. It will serve up its last session on Friday, so catch it while you can.

Chelsea Fringe launches in SE26:
The ChelseaFringe – a new garden fringe festival – launches in 2012 to run alongside the established RHS Chelsea Flower Show.

It is the brainchild of Tim Richardson, gardening writer for The Daily Telegraph and author of Futurescapes. Iris Borgers, who runs the ‘Grow Mayow‘ community garden in Mayow Park, and Tim Lund are setting up a localgarden trail to tie in with the festival. The trail will be similar to the Sydenham Arts Festival Visual Arts Trail which has formed part of the Sydenham Arts Festival since 2009.

The project will be launched on January 26th at the Here For Good Centre, 17 Sydenham Road starting at 6.30. Annie Gatti, gardening correspondent for The Times,will speak at the meeting.

The aim of the meeting is to launch a not-for-profit company and it is hoped that some of those attending will become Members of the company (limited by guarantee). The meeting will formally adopt some aims for the company and agree a motion to donate any surplus profits to charity, in addition to any charity fundraising from the open gardens.

If you want to help with the trail, would like to open your garden or would like to host a workshop during the festival, Tim and Iris would love to hear from you. They’re not necessarily looking for ‘show’ gardens – the main criteria are that the gardens should be interesting and show something of the character of the owner. Local parks or nature reserves will also be included in the trail – basically anywhere where people care about plants and take comfort from them.

The event will also be about helping independent professional gardeners find work, by stimulating an interest in gardening and helping put them in touch with potential clients. It may even encourage people to think about becoming professional gardeners and gain RHS qualifications. A website http://sydenhamcommunitygardens.org.uk/ has been set up with a “Find a Gardener” section.

The Forest Hill Society is holding a Burns Night at the All Inn One, 53 Perry Vale, SE23 2NE, this Thursday.

The meal is from 7.30pm, and if you'd like to join us, please call the pub on 020 8699 3311 to book by Tuesday 24th (as they need to order the haggis). The cost is £16.95 pp for 3 courses and a wee dram.

There will be the traditional Address to the Haggis and this year a few people will read some poetry. Feel free to bring along something yourself and don't feel shy!

Thankfull Sturdee was born in 1852 at 209 Evelyn Street. In 1883 he married Catherine Sarah Bland when he was living at 27 Albyn Road, St. John's, London SE8. In 1903 they were living at 16 Bolden Street, not far from Albyn Road, but by 1910 they had moved to Brockley, London SE4, where they lived until his death in 1934.

In 1911 he joined the Daily Mirror as a press photographer. A keen photographer and local historian he recorded Deptford’s history in images. His negatives and two series of prints with his own notes were donated to Deptford Borough Library not long before he died. These are now held by Lewisham Local History and Archives Centre.

Come along to the All Inn One for another great Forest Hill Society Burns Night. A traditional, and fun, evening of addressing the haggis, and then eating it with the usual tasty accompaniments.

Kafka v Kafkais about the struggle to communicate and its seeming impossibility. It’s about an ex-soldier and shopkeeper, and a lawyer and writer of genius. It’s about first and second generation migrants to a world city. It’s about the wall between a father and a son.

Howard Colyer is a playwright and novelist. His most recent productions were, The Overcoat, which had a sell-out run at the Brockley Jack in January 2011; Conference Call, which was selected for LOST Theatre’s One Act Play Festival in May; and Homework which appeared at the Jack in November.
Howard Colyer’s Homework is not only reminiscent of Waiting for Godot’s literal and actual inaction… but also of its cyclical and repetitive patterns.

Tribute to Icarus Club founder at Blackheath Halls, Feb 4th 2012: Dozens of South Londo’s finest acts, including The Portraits, Bruise, Kristy Gallacher and Mishaped Pearls, are set to play a tribute concert in memory of local music promoter Andy Ropek, who died of cancer in December 2011.

Andy, 52, was the frontman for the Icarus Club, which has been running regular live music nights at venues around the area, including Blackheath Halls, since 2004.

Dickens 2012: Walks, Talks, Screenings And More:

He's here, he's there, he's every where...

There’s no escaping the big man. As Charles Dickens turns 200, the cultural events surrounding his anniversary will have you cornered like a thieving urchin in a crowded marketplace. Here’s a selection of the Victorian goodness taking place across town. Further ideas, including many events outside of London, can be found on the Dickens 2012 website.

Exhibitions
The Museum of London’s Dickens exhibition is a must-see glimpse into the Victorian city and the author’s place in the metropolis. The accompanying book is also worth considering. Meanwhile, the British Library has a smaller exhibition tackling Dickens and the supernatural. The National Portrait Gallery has a small display of prints, drawings and photographs of the author, until 22 April. And, of course, the Charles Dickens Museum can be visited in Bloomsbury all year round.

Screenings
Fans of Dickens adaptations are well served by the BBC, who recently screened a new adaptation of Great Expectations, with Edwin Drood coming soon. The BFI has a major Dickens season, with film adaptations of most of his novels (alas, they’ve missed out the greatest of all — The Muppet Christmas Carol). Two particularly mouthwatering sessions (one of them tonight) will screen pre-1914 shorts with live piano accompaniment. Elsewhere, Museum of London Docklands screens David Lean’s Great Expectations (13 Jan).

Talks
Diarmuid Lawrence, director of the BBC’s forthcoming Edwin Drood adaptation, will be at the Museum of London on 23 January to discuss the famously incomplete story. Simon Callow’s at the British Library on 20 February and the Museum of London on 29 February to wax lyrical about his hero. Iain Sinclair wanders into the Museum on 25 April to chat with author Sebastian Groes about Victorian London’s reputation as a dark and squalid place. The BFI’s Dickens on Screen season also contains a few panel discussions after screenings.

Walks
The Dickens Fact From Fiction walk around the City takes place on 21 January, organised by the Museum of London. A similar walk, taking in important Thames-side sites, occurs on 14 April. A Clerkenwell walk is organised by London Metropolitan Archives on 16 April. Finally, Sandra Shevey conducts a 3-hour tour of Dickens’ London every Sunday in 2012.

Books
The Museum of London’s Dickens Book Club has turned pages since late last year. They’ll meet up at Foyles (Charing Cross Road) for Bleak House (6 February) and Oliver Twist (2 April). Follow on Twitter @DickensBookClub.

The days are drawing shorter and shorter. Very soon it will be the least light day of the year and to celebrate this and the returning of longer days, people in the New Cross, Brockley, Nunhead and Telegraph Hill area of South London are reviving and re-inventing the ancient local “Night of the Beasts” parade. This years solstice falls on Thursday December 22nd. See below for more info

All are welcome to join in, either starting at New Cross Library at 4.30pm or meeting at the Telegraph pub, Dennetts rd. SE14 from 5pm to then parade with musical accompaniment, through the streets up to The Hill Station for refreshment and wassailing. Keep in the spirit and keep warm by dressing in a beastly theme, bring a pet or a cuddly toy or carry a lantern to help light our way. There are preparatory making workshop sessions where you can help build a beast or make a costume element for yourself or kids; at the Narthex Hall in St. Catherines Church on Kitto rd. right behind the the Hill Station on Sat 17th Dec. from 11.30 to 4 and at New Cross Library Sun 18th Dec. from 11 to 5. But most of all come and join the parade.
Singers and musicians are invited to bring instruments to ad lib music on the parade, then to lead singing of traditional wassail carols, or songs celebrating animals, or the turning of the year. There will be a keyboard, guitar amp and mic.

There’s plenty happening in and around Sydenham over the holiday period. Here’s our selection of local events from mid-December to the New Year.

FRIDAY 16 DECEMBER
The Nigel Bagge Band are returning to the Golden Lion on Sydenham Road for blues night on Friday. It starts at 9pm and entry is free.

The Marshmallows Blues Club takes place at St Swithun’s church hall in Hither Green, with live entertainment from the house band and featured guests. It starts at 7.30pm and tickets are £5.

The Blackheath Halls are putting on their Christmas concert at 7.30pm. Local groups will be performing a variety of music, and there’ll be Christmas carols for everyone to join in with. Tickets are £14, or £12 for concessions, from the box office on 020 8463 0100.

Youth dance companies from across the country will be taking part in an end-of-year performance at Laban on Deptford Creekside on Friday night. It starts at 7pm, tickets are £6 or £3 for concessions from 020 8463 0100.

The 1950s film interpretation of Charles Dickens’ classic A Christmas Carol is being shown at the Vanishing Point cinema club in Lee on Friday night. The venue, on Lee High Road, is an old Victorian art studio that’ll be turned into Scrooge’s Counting House, with Christmas drinks, snow and carol singing. It starts at 7.30pm, tickets are £12 on the door or £10 in advance on 020 8852 0234.

SATURDAY 17 DECEMBER

The South London Singers are celebrating 30 years of music-making with a carol concert raising money for the NSPCC on Saturday night. It takes place at Beckenham Methodist Church at 7.45pm. Tickets are £10, children go free, and you can find out more by calling 020 8656 2815.

Brockley Road has gained an intriguing addition to the numerous newsagents and fried chicken take-aways when the cupcake cafe Pat-a-Cake opened its doors last month.

The walls of the single-roomed, wood-clad establishment are covered in the work of local artists. Floral bunting, antique teacups and the smell of fresh baking complete the atmosphere.

Stacie Maile, 28, conceived the decor herself and single-handedly runs the place, baking every cupcake from scratch.

Stacie used to work in accounts, whilst selling her cupcakes from a Brick Lane market stall each weekend, but says: “I didn’t like working in accounts!”

“I started getting loads of wedding orders in Brick Lane; I got so many that I quit my job.”

Soon after, Stacie and an estate agent friend began to hunt for a place to set up a permanent cupcake business. She said: “It wasn’t planned, but we had always wanted to do it.”

The location they settled on was 358 Brockley Road and it has so far been a successful spot. “There’s nothing like it here,” says Stacie, “and it’s close to [Crofton Park] station, schools and nurseries… Lots of mums with babies come in; they’ve said it’s nice that there’s somewhere like this.”

The cupcakes have proved popular, and Stacie says all of her customers have been very complimentary about her baking.

Every cupcake is based on a family recipe: “They’re all my mum’s recipes, but tweaked slightly. I always remember baking with my mum when I was little.” Stacie continued to bake when she left home, as a hobby with friends and housemates, but has only been doing it professionally for the last year and a half.

As Stacie bakes fresh cupcakes every day, the selection in the cafe is always different. Chocolate peanut butter is an enduring favourite, and Stacie tells of a recent innovation involving crumbled mint aero and mint icing.

As well as the beautifully handcrafted cakes, Pat-a-Cake sells savoury snacks, juices, teas, and coffees.

Band of Holy Joy at the Montague Arms:

The Band of Holy Joy are surely one of the greatest bands ever to have been associated with New Cross. In the late 1980s they were fairly massive on the indie scene with their lush Brechtian/Brelish/folk-tinged tales, but they split up in 1993.

Next week, on Thursday December 22nd, they are playing at the Montague Arms. Obviously if you loved them then you will want to see them now. But apart from nostalgia, why bother? Well since they reformed they have been putting out some fine new music - their new album How to Kill a Butterfly (Exotic Pylon records) got a 4-star review from Mojo.

I saw BoHJ several times in their heyday (including at both Town and Country Clubs), and have seen them once since they got back together, playing at The Windmill in Brixton a few years ago. I thought singer Johny Brown acually sounded better at the latter. Rather like The Pogues, their music was always 'mature' - back in the day they were young musicians singing as if they old men and women looking back on lifetimes of passion and regret. Now maybe they've grown into the songs!

GIFTED weekend on Creekside and beyond: This weekend sees a confusing array of local venues opening to showcase arts and crafts, offering the chance to shop for unique Christmas presents for friends and family. Mulled wine, mince pies (and a price cap on some work) are available at some venues. It is also SLAM Friday tonight, so some venues are open this evening. We have tried to make sense of all the different details for you here.

The Leegate Arts Project

A once empty shop in the desolate Leegate Shopping Centre has been transformed into a creative art studio to offer free print workshops to local people. The shop will then become a temporary gallery for one week at the end of the project in February 2012, exhibiting all the work produced in the workshops.

From early December 2011 to late February 2012, Leegate Arts Project wants to work with local people to develop a creative project and produce a community art exhibition. Residents aged 40/50+ and young people 13-19 are invited to take part in the project.

Through a series of workshops and creative sessions, participants can explore printmaking, photography, drawing and creative writing.

The project is run by a relaxed group of local artists, photographers, designers and writers who will lead creative and fun workshops. There is also a brilliant team of volunteers made up of a mixture of 6th form arts students, local residents, youth workers and people who just love art! As a group we will help you to find your creative side and learn new skills. All we need you to do is turn up!

Utrophia's next show ‘Deptford Soil’ is an exhibition of work by local artists affiliated with the McMillan Herb Garden, a non-profit organisation which runs creative workshops for young people in the Deptford area.

This exhibition celebrates different aspects of Deptford culture and illustrates the personal creative processes born from residing in SE8. Exhibits are not confined to reflecting the physical nature of the area, or the people who inhabit it, but also explore individual responses to the greater world community through art, music and design.

The Fault Index is a celebration of isolated events, a series of connected and unconnected incidents presented in a different order for each performance. Juxtaposed along 'fault lines', the random alignment of where the episodes fall dictates an unexpected dynamic that jolts between harmonious transition and discord. This underpins the themes of displacement, discontinuity and unity. At its heart is a bedrock of three ensemble pieces that weave together disparate and independent choreographic elements in a percussive and spirited tour de force.

Concert for Japan

TrinityLaban in conjunction with the Chapel of St Peter and St Paul at the Old Royal Naval College, Greenwich, will stage a concert on Saturday 26th March at 3pm in support of the Japanese Red Cross relief effort in North-Eastern Japan, following the recent horrific earthquake and tsunami. The concert will feature some of Trinity College of Music's Japanese students and others. Among the pieces to be performed will be the Requiem for String Orchestra by the Japanese composer Toru Takemitsu.

The concert will not be ticketed, but there will be a retiring collection in aid of the Red Cross.

Tank is proud to present a unique sound installation by German artist Karl-Heinz Jeron. The idea for Fresh Music for Rotten Vegetables stems from Jeron's interest in how labour, product and art work is valued. Rotten vegetables are not waste but a commodity from which energy and industry can be drawn. Jeron has designed the exhibition based around a series of workshops where attendees source waste food locally, build unique singing device from simple components and add each one to the installation. By the close of show the orchestra will be sixty or so strong, emitting a cacophony of bleeps, beeps and hums.
